Butterfly Park Benalmádena: Tropical Butterflies & Visitor Guide

Butterfly Park Benalmádena: Tropical Butterflies & Visitor Guide

Imagine walking into a tropical garden where more than 1,500 exotic butterflies are flying freely around you.

That is the experience at Butterfly Park Benalmádena, better known locally as the Mariposario de Benalmádena.

Located in the hills above the Costa del Sol, close to Benalmádena Pueblo and directly beside the Benalmádena Stupa, the park recreates a warm tropical environment filled with butterflies, plants, flowers and water.

Unlike a conventional zoo, there are no distant enclosures separating you from the main attraction.

The butterflies share the space with you.

They fly across the paths, rest on tropical plants and sometimes pass only centimetres away.

You can also learn about their complete life cycle and potentially watch new butterflies emerging from their chrysalises.

The relatively compact size makes the Butterfly Park Benalmádena particularly easy to combine with several of Benalmádena's other highlights.

Here is what you need to know before visiting.

What Is Butterfly Park Benalmádena?

Butterfly Park Benalmádena is an indoor tropical butterfly garden where exotic butterflies fly freely among visitors.

Rather than displaying butterflies behind glass, the park creates a controlled tropical ecosystem where visitors enter the butterflies' environment.

More than 1,500 butterflies can be present inside the tropical garden.

They originate from tropical regions around the world and represent many different species, colours, sizes and patterns.

This creates a completely different experience from looking at preserved specimens in a museum.

Everything around you is alive.

Butterflies move between flowers, rest on leaves, feed and interact with their environment while you walk through the same space.

Walk Through a Tropical Environment

One of the first things you will notice is the climate.

Tropical butterflies require very different conditions from the dry Mediterranean climate outside.

The butterfly garden therefore maintains warm temperatures and high humidity.

Expect the interior to feel tropical.

This is not simply for visitor atmosphere.

The temperature, humidity, vegetation and water are fundamental to creating suitable conditions for the butterflies and plants.

That contrast can be particularly noticeable in summer.

You may enter from an already warm Costa del Sol day and find yourself in an even more humid environment.

Dress accordingly and expect your camera lens or glasses to react briefly to the change in humidity.

More Than 1,500 Butterflies

The headline attraction is the number of butterflies flying freely around the garden.

Current visitor information consistently refers to more than 1,500 exotic butterflies.

But numbers alone do not explain the experience.

Look closely.

Some butterflies are small and easy to overlook.

Others are considerably larger and display striking colours when they open their wings.

Species originate from different tropical regions around the world, which means the population is far more diverse than the butterflies you might encounter naturally around southern Spain.

The exact mix can change.

Butterflies have relatively short adult lives, so the population of a butterfly park is continuously developing.

That makes the attraction unusually dynamic.

A visit several months later may not look exactly the same.

Watch the Butterfly Life Cycle

One of the most educational parts of Butterfly Park Benalmádena is the opportunity to understand the complete butterfly life cycle.

Butterflies undergo complete metamorphosis:

egg → caterpillar → chrysalis → adult butterfly

Seeing these stages in real life makes the process much easier to understand, particularly for children.

The chrysalis area is especially interesting.

If your timing is right, you may even see a butterfly emerging.

This process cannot be scheduled for visitors.

Nature decides when it happens.

That unpredictability is part of what makes the experience special.

Rather than simply photographing adult butterflies, spend some time looking at the earlier stages of their development as well.

Look Closely at the Plants

The tropical plants are not simply decoration.

They are fundamental to the ecosystem.

Different plants provide food, shelter and places where butterflies can reproduce.

Adult butterflies may feed from flowers and other food sources, while caterpillars can depend on specific host plants.

That relationship between plant and insect is one of the most interesting lessons inside the park.

Look at the leaves as carefully as you look at the flowers.

You may discover caterpillars or other stages of the butterfly life cycle that visitors walking quickly through the garden completely miss.

There Are Other Animals Too

Butterflies are naturally the main attraction, but they are not the only animals living inside the tropical environment.

Current visitor information also mentions other residents, including birds, fish, reptiles and a wallaby.

Treat these as additional discoveries rather than the primary reason to visit.

The strength of the Mariposario de Benalmádena remains its butterfly experience.

For families, however, spotting another animal among the tropical vegetation can make exploring the garden even more engaging.

Instead of immediately telling children what they should find, turn the visit into a simple observation game.

How many different colours can they see?

Can they spot a butterfly feeding?

Can they find a chrysalis?

Can they identify another animal in the garden?

Is Butterfly Park Benalmádena Good for Children?

Yes.

This is one of the strongest family attractions in Benalmádena for younger children because the experience is visual, educational and relatively easy to understand.

Children do not need to read long museum descriptions to appreciate a large butterfly flying past them.

At the same time, there is genuine educational value.

They can learn how insects develop, why plants matter and how different species adapt to their environments.

The park also has educational material connected with butterfly biology and conservation.

For families already spending several days around beaches and swimming pools, it provides a very different type of activity.

Butterfly Conservation in Andalucía

The educational role of the park extends beyond tropical species.

Mariposario de Benalmádena is currently collaborating with the Sociedad Andaluza de Entomología on the Violetae Plan 2025–2028.

The project focuses on Agrodiaetus violetae, a butterfly endemic to southern Spain.

Around 90% of its global distribution is found in Andalucía, and the species is classified as vulnerable in the Andalusian Catalogue of Threatened Species.

The conservation project studies populations around the Hondoneros area with the aim of improving knowledge of breeding and feeding areas and supporting future conservation and environmental education.

That gives the park a local conservation dimension beyond displaying tropical butterflies.

Can Butterflies Land on You?

They can.

Because the butterflies fly freely, there is always a possibility that one will land on your clothing or body.

Do not try to force this.

Never grab or touch a butterfly.

Their wings are delicate and unnecessary handling can harm them.

If one lands on you naturally, remain calm and allow it to leave by itself.

The best approach throughout the park is simple:

look, photograph and observe — but do not touch.

Visitors should also remain on the designated paths and avoid feeding the animals.

Photography at Butterfly Park Benalmádena

This is an excellent location for photography.

But photographing butterflies can be more difficult than expected.

They move unpredictably and often close their wings immediately after landing.

Patience produces better results than chasing them around the garden.

Find an area with flowers where several butterflies are feeding.

Wait.

Let the butterflies come into your frame.

A smartphone is perfectly adequate for most visitors.

If you use a dedicated camera, remember that the humidity inside the tropical environment may cause temporary condensation when entering.

Give your equipment time to adjust.

How Long Do You Need?

For most visitors, 1–1.5 hours is sufficient.

You can technically walk through much faster.

We would not recommend doing that.

The attraction becomes more interesting when you slow down enough to notice the smaller details.

Look at the plants.

Watch butterflies feeding.

Spend time around the chrysalis area.

Read some of the educational information.

Families with particularly interested children or photography enthusiasts may stay longer.

The compact visit duration also makes the park ideal for combining with other Benalmádena attractions.

Butterfly Park Benalmádena Opening Hours

Current visitor information lists the park as open:

Monday–Sunday: 10:00–19:30

Special opening hours can apply around certain holidays.

Opening times can also change, so always check current information before travelling.

This is particularly important if you plan to visit late in the afternoon.

How Much Are Butterfly Park Benalmádena Tickets?

Ticket prices can vary depending on the booking channel and any current promotions.

Current online ticket platforms generally list admission from approximately €15 for adults, with reduced rates available for certain categories.

Children under three are currently listed as entering free through some official ticket distributors.

Because prices can change, we recommend checking the official Mariposario de Benalmádena website or its authorised booking channel before purchasing.

Do not plan your visit around an old fixed price from a travel article.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Morning is an excellent option.

The park is usually easy to combine with other attractions in the hills above Benalmádena, and beginning here gives you plenty of time afterwards.

The indoor tropical environment also makes weather less important than at many Costa del Sol attractions.

Cloudy day?

The butterflies are still there.

Extremely hot afternoon?

The park gives you an alternative to spending every hour on the beach.

However, remember that the interior itself is deliberately warm and humid.

Visit the Benalmádena Stupa Next

One of the easiest combinations is directly outside.

The Benalmádena Stupa is located beside the Butterfly Park.

That means there is almost no reason to visit one without at least looking at the other.

The Stupa provides a completely different experience.

Inside the Butterfly Park, you are surrounded by tropical vegetation and insects.

Outside, the Stupa sits high above the Costa del Sol with panoramic views towards the Mediterranean.

Together, they create an easy two-stop itinerary.

Continue to Benalmádena Pueblo

Next, head towards Benalmádena Pueblo.

The whitewashed village offers narrow streets, traditional Andalusian architecture, squares and viewpoints.

This is one of the best ways to turn a relatively short Butterfly Park visit into a substantial half-day.

A simple route is:

Butterfly Park → Benalmádena Stupa → Benalmádena Pueblo

All three experiences reveal a side of Benalmádena far removed from the resort coastline below.

Add Castillo de Colomares

You can extend the route with Castillo de Colomares.

Its unusual architecture makes it one of Benalmádena's most recognisable landmarks.

This creates an especially strong sightseeing day for couples and families who want more than the beach.

Butterflies → Buddhist architecture → white village → fantasy-like monument

Four completely different experiences can be found within a relatively small part of Benalmádena.

Mountains or Mediterranean?

From here, you have two excellent directions.

For mountains, add the Benalmádena Cable Car and travel towards Mount Calamorro.

For the coast, head downhill towards Puerto Marina Benalmádena.

Around the coastline you can also explore Parque de la Paloma, Castillo Bil-Bil and Playa de Bil Bil.

You do not need to complete everything in one day.

Benalmádena works particularly well when divided into an upper Benalmádena day and a coastal Benalmádena day.

Make More of Benalmádena with Costa Card

Butterfly Park Benalmádena is not currently listed as a Costa Card participating attraction.

That means Costa Card should not determine whether you visit the Mariposario.

Instead, use Costa Card to add participating experiences around the rest of your Benalmádena stay.

For example, Prison Island Benalmádena currently gives Costa Card users 30 extra minutes when booking an experience.

Prefer something outdoors?

Pirate Parasailing Benalmádena currently provides 10% discount on its parasailing experiences from Puerto Marina.

These activities work particularly well on a separate coastal day.

Try the Benalmádena Food & Fun Route

For another day, use the Benalmádena Food & Fun route.

The route is designed as an approximately 8–10 hour day and currently combines three Costa Card benefits.

That allows you to divide your destination logically:

Day 1: Butterfly Park → Stupa → Pueblo → Colomares

Day 2: Coast → Puerto Marina → Costa Card Food & Fun experiences

Instead of trying to squeeze every attraction into one day, you experience both sides of Benalmádena properly.

Example: A Complete Butterfly Park Day

A relaxed itinerary could look like this:

10:00 – Butterfly Park Benalmádena
Explore the tropical garden and butterfly life cycle.

11:30 – Benalmádena Stupa
Enjoy the architecture and Mediterranean views.

12:30 – Benalmádena Pueblo
Walk through the whitewashed historic centre.

14:00 – Lunch

15:30 – Castillo de Colomares

17:00 – Return towards the coast

18:00 – Parque de la Paloma

19:00 – Puerto Marina

20:00 – Dinner

This gives you nature, architecture, local character, viewpoints and the Mediterranean without making the day dependent on one large attraction.

Is Butterfly Park Benalmádena Worth Visiting?

Yes, particularly for families, nature lovers and anyone looking for something different from another beach day.

The Butterfly Park Benalmádena succeeds because the experience is immersive.

You do not simply look at butterflies through glass.

You enter their tropical environment.

More than 1,500 butterflies can fly around you while you learn about their life cycle, plants and conservation.

Allow approximately 1–1.5 hours inside.

Then take advantage of the excellent location to explore the Stupa, Benalmádena Pueblo and Castillo de Colomares.

From Tropical Butterflies to the Mediterranean

Start your day surrounded by tropical butterflies.

Stand beside a Buddhist Stupa overlooking the Costa del Sol.

Walk through a white Andalusian village.

Then finish beside the Mediterranean.

That variety is exactly what makes Benalmádena worth exploring beyond its beaches.
