Benalmádena Cable Car: Mount Calamorro Views, Tickets & Visitor Tips

Benalmádena Cable Car: Mount Calamorro Views, Tickets & Visitor Tips

Beaches may define much of a Costa del Sol holiday, but some of the best views are found hundreds of metres above them.

The Benalmádena Cable Car, or Teleférico Benalmádena, connects the centre of Arroyo de la Miel with Mount Calamorro, taking you from the town to the mountains in approximately 15 minutes.

During the journey, the Mediterranean coastline gradually opens below you. At the top, panoramic viewpoints and walking trails turn the cable-car ride into much more than simply a journey up and down the mountain.

On a clear day, the views can extend across the Málaga coastline towards Gibraltar, Sierra Nevada and even the African coast.

That combination of scenery, nature and accessibility makes the Benalmádena Cable Car one of the most distinctive experiences in Benalmádena.

What Is the Benalmádena Cable Car?

The Benalmádena Cable Car is the Costa del Sol's only cable car and has connected Arroyo de la Miel with Mount Calamorro since 2000.

The journey covers almost three kilometres.

Each cabin has capacity for up to four people, and the ascent takes approximately 15 minutes.

At the beginning of the journey, you rise above the urban area of Arroyo de la Miel.

As the cable car continues climbing, buildings gradually give way to the mountain landscape and increasingly wide views across the Mediterranean coastline.

The difference between the departure point and the upper mountain environment is what makes the journey so memorable.

You are not simply visiting a viewpoint.

The changing landscape during the ascent is part of the attraction.

The Journey Up Mount Calamorro

The cable car covers an elevation difference of approximately 636 metres between its route points.

That explains why the landscape changes so quickly.

At first, you look across Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Costa.

Continue climbing and the coastline becomes increasingly visible.

The Mediterranean stretches out in front of you while the slopes of Mount Calamorro introduce a completely different side of Benalmádena.

Mediterranean plants such as rockrose and thyme grow around the mountain.

Approximately 15 minutes after departure, you reach the upper station at around 720 metres above sea level.

But do not immediately queue for the return journey.

The best part of the visit starts here.

Explore Mount Calamorro

Mount Calamorro rises to almost 800 metres above sea level and represents the highest point in Benalmádena.

From the cable-car station, visitors can explore viewpoints and walking trails across the mountain.

This transforms the Benalmádena Cable Car from a short scenic ride into a genuine nature experience.

Allow yourself enough time at the top.

Walk.

Stop at the viewpoints.

Look inland as well as towards the sea.

Many visitors focus entirely on the Mediterranean, but the surrounding mountains and Guadalhorce Valley provide another perspective on the geography of Málaga province.

What Can You See from the Top?

Visibility depends heavily on the weather.

On a clear day, the official cable-car information states that the panorama can extend towards:

the Málaga coastline
Sierra Nevada
Gibraltar
the African coast

Do not treat seeing Africa as guaranteed.

Atmospheric conditions determine how far you can see.

Even without extreme long-distance visibility, the view across Benalmádena and the Mediterranean is impressive.

The height also helps you understand the geography of the Costa del Sol.

From above, the relationship between mountains, towns and coastline becomes much clearer.

Walk to the Panoramic Viewpoints

The upper area contains several signposted walking routes and panoramic viewpoints.

Three principal viewpoints provide different perspectives across the surrounding landscape.

The signposted viewpoint trails cover a combined distance of approximately 2.75 kilometres.

You do not need to complete every path.

If you mainly came for the views, choose one or two viewpoints and take your time.

If hiking is part of the reason for your visit, Mount Calamorro offers considerably more.

Several longer routes continue into the Sierra de Benalmádena and Sierra de Mijas.

This means the cable car can serve either as an attraction itself or as the starting point for a more active mountain day.

Benalmádena Cable Car for Hikers

The cable car is particularly useful if you enjoy hiking but do not want to spend most of your energy climbing from sea level.

Taking the Benalmádena Cable Car allows you to begin your walk high on Mount Calamorro.

From here, multiple hiking itineraries connect with the surrounding mountains.

The official network includes six mountain routes of varying difficulty.

Some are relatively accessible, while others extend much further through the Sierra de Mijas.

Do not begin a substantial mountain route casually.

Bring suitable footwear, water and sun protection, and understand the route before starting.

Mountain conditions are very different from walking along Benalmádena's promenade.

Birds of Prey at Mount Calamorro

Another experience available near the summit is the birds-of-prey presentation operated by the Fundación Valle de las Águilas.

This is particularly popular with families.

However, there is an important detail to understand:

The birds-of-prey presentation is not included in the Benalmádena Cable Car admission ticket.

The activity is independently operated and payment is required separately, currently in cash at the entrance to the presentation area.

The schedule can also change or the presentation can be cancelled because of weather, capacity, safety, veterinary or public-health considerations.

If this is an important part of your visit, check the programme for your date before travelling.

Is Benalmádena Cable Car Good for Children?

Yes, particularly for children who enjoy transport, mountains or nature.

The cable-car journey itself can already feel like an adventure.

At the top, viewpoints and walking paths add more freedom than a traditional indoor attraction.

Families can also potentially combine the visit with the birds-of-prey presentation.

There are some practical rules to remember.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over in each cabin.

You should also think about the temperature.

Conditions on Mount Calamorro can differ from the beach below, particularly when wind is involved.

Bring an extra layer when appropriate.

How Much Are Benalmádena Cable Car Tickets?

The cable car currently uses dynamic online pricing.

At the time of writing, standard return tickets are advertised from:

General admission, age 8+: from €17.90 online
Reduced return admission: from €12.90 online
Under 3 years and under 1 metre: free under the published conditions

Ticket-office prices currently start higher than advance online prices.

One-way tickets and open-date tickets are also available.

Because prices can vary by date, check the official Benalmádena Cable Car ticket page for the price applicable to your visit.

Buying in advance can therefore be worthwhile.

What Are the Opening Hours?

Unlike an ordinary museum, the Benalmádena Cable Car does not have one simple year-round opening schedule.

Operating days and hours vary throughout the season.

Use the official opening calendar to select the exact day you want to visit.

Weather is particularly important.

Cable-car operation can be changed or suspended during adverse conditions.

If the weather looks uncertain, verify that the cable car is operating before travelling to Arroyo de la Miel.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

For views, choose a clear day.

Cloud, haze and wind can make a substantial difference to the experience.

Morning often provides comfortable conditions, particularly during summer.

Late afternoon can produce beautiful Mediterranean light, although you need to check the operating schedule carefully so you have enough time at the summit before the final descent.

Avoid judging the conditions only from the beach.

Weather on Mount Calamorro can feel noticeably different from conditions at sea level.

How Long Do You Need?

For most visitors, allow approximately 2–3 hours.

That includes:

  • the ascent;

  • time at the viewpoints;

  • a short walk;

  • photographs;

  • and the descent.

If you add the birds-of-prey presentation, allow longer.

If you plan to hike, the cable-car visit can easily become a half-day or even longer outdoor experience.

The biggest mistake is allowing only enough time for the ride itself.

Mount Calamorro is the destination.

How Do You Get to Benalmádena Cable Car?

The departure station is in Arroyo de la Miel.

Address: Explanada del Tivoli, s/n, 29630 Benalmádena.

The location is convenient if you are using public transport.

The Arroyo de la Miel Cercanías train station is nearby, making the attraction accessible from destinations including Málaga, Torremolinos and Fuengirola.

Bus services also stop around Tivoli.

If travelling by car, the official route uses the A-7 and exit 1003 for Benalmádena–Arroyo de la Miel.

Combine the Cable Car with Benalmádena Pueblo

After descending, continue exploring Benalmádena away from the coast.

Our Benalmádena Pueblo guide introduces the whitewashed historic village further uphill.

The atmosphere is completely different from Benalmádena Costa.

Narrow streets, white houses and traditional squares provide a slower experience after Mount Calamorro.

Nearby, you can also visit the remarkable Castillo de Colomares.

Add the Benalmádena Stupa

Another excellent viewpoint can be found at the Benalmádena Stupa.

This creates an interesting viewpoint-themed day.

Mount Calamorro gives you the highest perspective.

The Stupa provides a different panorama from the slopes above the coast.

They are not substitutes.

Together, they demonstrate just how dramatically Benalmádena rises from the Mediterranean towards the mountains.

Or Head Back Towards the Coast

Prefer the Mediterranean after your mountain visit?

Continue towards Puerto Marina Benalmádena.

The contrast could hardly be greater.

Within the same day you can stand high above the Costa del Sol and later walk between boats, restaurants and waterfront terraces.

From the marina, continue towards Castillo Bil-Bil and Playa Bil Bil.

That combination gives you mountain and Mediterranean Benalmádena in a single day.

Make More of Your Benalmádena Day with Costa Card

The Benalmádena Cable Car is not currently listed as a Costa Card participating attraction.

Costa Card therefore should not determine whether you visit Mount Calamorro.

Instead, use the card for participating experiences you add around your Benalmádena itinerary.

Explore Costa Card to see the current activities, restaurants and benefits available in Benalmádena and our other participating destinations.

For example, Prison Island Benalmádena currently provides Costa Card users with 30 extra minutes.

That makes it a completely different option for another part of your stay, particularly if you want an indoor activity after spending time outdoors.

Use the Food & Fun Route for Another Benalmádena Day

Costa Card also has a dedicated Benalmádena Food & Fun route.

The route currently combines three participating stops and is designed as an approximately 8–10 hour experience.

It includes lunch at Daneku, Prison Island and an evening stop, with Costa Card benefits built into the route.

This works better as a separate experience day than trying to force it around Mount Calamorro.

One day can focus on mountains, viewpoints and nature.

Another can focus on food, entertainment and Costa Card experiences.

Example: A Complete Benalmádena Cable Car Day

A relaxed itinerary could look like this:

10:00 – Arroyo de la Miel
Arrive near the cable-car station.

10:30 – Benalmádena Cable Car
Begin the approximately 15-minute ascent.

10:45 – Mount Calamorro
Explore the viewpoints and short walking trails.

12:30 – Descend to Arroyo de la Miel

13:00 – Lunch

14:30 – Benalmádena Pueblo

15:30 – Castillo de Colomares

17:00 – Benalmádena Stupa

18:30 – Puerto Marina

20:00 – Dinner

You do not need to follow these times exactly.

The important point is the progression:

mountain → village → culture → viewpoint → Mediterranean

Is the Benalmádena Cable Car Worth It?

For the right weather conditions, yes.

The Benalmádena Cable Car offers something that beaches and coastal attractions cannot reproduce: a rapid transition from a busy Costa del Sol town to a mountain environment almost 800 metres above sea level.

The approximately 15-minute journey is only the beginning.

The viewpoints, walking trails and landscape at Mount Calamorro are what turn it into a substantial experience.

Allow at least two to three hours.

Choose a clear day.

And do not immediately return downhill when you reach the top.

See the Costa del Sol from Above

Ride from Arroyo de la Miel towards Mount Calamorro.

Explore the viewpoints.

Then return to the coast and experience Benalmádena from an entirely different perspective.
