Selwo Aventura Estepona: Tickets, Animals & Family Visitor Guide

Selwo Aventura Estepona: Tickets, Animals & Family Visitor Guide

Lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos and zebras are probably not the animals you expect to encounter during a Costa del Sol holiday.

At Selwo Aventura Estepona, that is exactly the point.

Spread across a large natural landscape in the hills of Estepona, Selwo Aventura combines a wildlife park with an outdoor adventure experience. More than 700 animals representing different species live across environments designed to recreate habitats from Africa and other parts of the world.

Unlike a compact urban zoo, Selwo is built around space.

You walk through large outdoor areas, cross bridges, discover viewpoints and move between different animal territories. Optional experiences such as the Serengeti Safari can take you even closer to the park's African-inspired landscape.

For families, animal lovers and anyone looking for a full-day attraction away from the beach, Selwo Aventura Esteponais one of the major attractions on the western Costa del Sol.

Here is what you need to know before visiting.

What Is Selwo Aventura Estepona?

Selwo Aventura Estepona is a large wildlife and adventure park situated between Estepona and Marbella.

The attraction combines animals, landscaped habitats and outdoor activities across a much larger area than you might expect from a conventional zoo.

The park's animal population includes species associated with Africa and other ecosystems.

Among the animals you may encounter are:

African elephants
giraffes
lions
white rhinos
zebras
cheetahs
hippos
different antelope species
primates
birds

The exact animals visible during your visit naturally depend on their behaviour and the areas open that day.

Do not approach Selwo as a checklist where every animal must appear on demand.

Allow time to observe.

More Than 700 Animals

Selwo Aventura currently describes itself as home to more than 700 animals.

The scale is important.

Animals are distributed throughout different territories rather than concentrated into one small area.

That means walking is part of the experience.

You move through the landscape to discover different species and environments.

For children, this can make the day feel more adventurous than simply walking between conventional enclosures.

For adults, the open setting and surrounding hills also create a very different atmosphere from an urban animal park.

Explore the African-Inspired Landscapes

Africa plays a major role in Selwo's identity.

Giraffes, zebras, rhinos and antelope create some of the park's most recognisable scenes.

The landscapes are designed to give these areas a more open character.

Of course, you are still in Estepona rather than on an African reserve.

But the combination of animals, vegetation, terrain and large spaces helps create the safari-inspired experience Selwo is known for.

One of the best ways to experience this part of the park more closely is through the optional Serengeti Safari.

What Is the Serengeti Safari?

The Serengeti Safari is an additional experience inside Selwo Aventura.

Visitors board a specially adapted off-road vehicle and travel through the Reserva de los Lagos area with a guide.

The experience brings you closer to species living in this section of the park and adds interpretation from the guide.

It is one of the most distinctive upgrades available at Selwo.

However, there are two important things to know:

The Serengeti Safari is not included in standard admission.

And availability is limited.

If the safari is one of the main reasons you want to visit Selwo, check availability when booking rather than assuming you can simply add it after arriving.

See Giraffes, Zebras and Rhinos

For many children, the large African herbivores are among the highlights.

Giraffes are particularly impressive when seen relatively close because their scale becomes much more obvious than in photographs.

Zebras and antelope add movement to the open landscapes, while white rhinos provide a completely different presence.

Instead of rushing from animal to animal, choose a few locations where you can stop.

Watch how the species move.

Look at how they interact with their surroundings.

The park becomes much more interesting when you give the animals time to behave naturally.

Meet the Elephants

African elephants are another major attraction at Selwo Aventura Estepona.

They are also useful for introducing children to conservation.

Large mammals require enormous natural habitats in the wild, and many face pressure from habitat loss, conflict with humans and other threats.

Selwo participates in conservation and breeding programmes connected with endangered and vulnerable species.

That gives the park an educational role alongside its entertainment value.

Take time to read the information provided around the animal areas.

The day should ideally leave children with more than photographs.

Lions and Other Predators

Predators naturally attract attention.

Selwo is home to species including lions and cheetahs.

Do not be surprised if they are less active than you expected.

Large cats can spend substantial parts of the day resting, particularly when temperatures rise.

This is normal behaviour.

Arriving earlier in the day can make walking more comfortable and may also provide different opportunities to observe animals before the strongest afternoon heat.

But no time of day guarantees that a particular animal will be active.

Walk Through a Very Different Animal Park

The physical environment is one of Selwo's defining characteristics.

This is not a flat indoor attraction.

Expect paths, slopes and considerable outdoor walking.

Comfortable footwear is important.

So is sun protection.

During warmer months, bring water, sunscreen and a hat.

Families with very young children should also consider the amount of walking when planning the day.

Do not try to maintain an unrealistic pace.

Stop regularly.

Use the viewpoints and rest areas.

And allow the park itself to determine the rhythm of your visit.

Is Selwo Aventura Good for Children?

Yes.

Selwo Aventura Estepona is primarily one of the strongest family attractions around Estepona.

Large animals create immediate excitement for younger visitors, while the scale of the park gives older children more to explore than a small conventional zoo.

The optional experiences can add another layer for families looking for something more memorable.

But age matters when planning.

Young children may become tired after several hours of walking.

Older children may be more interested in the adventure elements and safari experience.

Rather than trying to see absolutely everything, decide beforehand which animals and activities matter most to your family.

How Long Do You Need at Selwo Aventura?

Allow approximately 4–5 hours for a comfortable visit.

You can spend longer.

Families attending additional activities, stopping for lunch or booking the Serengeti Safari can easily turn Selwo into most of a day.

We would not recommend planning another major paid attraction immediately afterwards.

Selwo works better as the main event.

Add something simple later:

a beach, a walk through Estepona or dinner in the historic centre.

That creates a much more realistic holiday day.

Selwo Aventura Opening Hours

Selwo does not use one fixed opening schedule throughout the entire year.

Opening days and closing times vary by season.

This is especially important outside peak holiday periods, when the park may not operate every day.

Always check the official Selwo Aventura calendar for your exact date.

Do not rely on generic opening hours copied from an old travel website.

If you are travelling outside summer, checking the official calendar should be the first step in planning your visit.

How Much Are Selwo Aventura Tickets?

Selwo uses dynamic pricing.

That means there is no single online price that applies to every day of the year.

At the time of writing, standard online admission can start from approximately €19.90 on selected dates, with prices changing according to the visit date and ticket conditions.

Booking online in advance is generally the most sensible approach.

Check the official Selwo ticket page for the price applying to your date.

Additional experiences such as the Serengeti Safari require separate payment unless explicitly included in a package.

This is why comparing the actual options for your visit date matters more than remembering one advertised starting price.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Selwo?

Arrive reasonably early.

Selwo is predominantly an outdoor attraction, and temperatures around Estepona can become high during summer.

Starting earlier gives you more time to explore before the strongest afternoon heat.

Spring and autumn are particularly attractive periods because walking conditions can be more comfortable.

In summer, plan around the weather.

Bring water.

Use sun protection.

Take breaks.

And do not underestimate the size of the park.

If your visit falls on an unusually hot day, a slower itinerary is better than trying to complete every route as quickly as possible.

How Do You Get to Selwo Aventura?

Selwo Aventura is located directly off the A-7 between Estepona and Marbella, around kilometre 162.5.

For many visitors, travelling by car is the most practical option.

Parking is available at the attraction.

If you are staying in Estepona without a car, check current local transport and taxi options before visiting.

Do not assume the park is within walking distance of central Estepona.

It is not.

This is an attraction you should plan transport for in advance.

What to Do After Selwo Aventura

After four or five hours at Selwo, keep the rest of the day relatively simple.

Central Estepona is an excellent option.

The old town combines pedestrian streets, squares, flowers and traditional Andalusian architecture.

It is very different from the open landscapes of Selwo.

Spend the evening walking rather than immediately booking another major attraction.

Have dinner.

Explore the streets.

And use the change of pace to recover after a substantial day outdoors.

Discover the Estepona Orchidarium

If you still want another attraction, consider the Estepona Orchidarium.

The botanical attraction brings you into an indoor tropical environment filled with thousands of orchids and other plants.

This creates an interesting contrast with Selwo.

At Selwo, animals are the focus.

At the Orchidarium, plants take centre stage.

Because the Orchidarium has its own opening schedule, check whether the timing works before attempting both on the same day.

For most families, keeping it for another morning may be more enjoyable.

Walk the Estepona Murals Route

Another excellent option is completely free.

The Estepona Murals Route transforms buildings across the city into large-scale public artworks.

Instead of entering one museum, you walk between murals spread throughout different neighbourhoods.

This makes the route particularly suitable after a paid attraction such as Selwo.

You have already spent money on the main experience.

Now explore the city without purchasing another ticket.

The murals also give you a reason to walk beyond the most obvious streets of the old town.

Beach or Old Town?

After Selwo, you essentially have two easy choices.

Beach: head towards the Mediterranean and relax.

Old Town: explore central Estepona on foot.

Do not overcomplicate it.

Selwo itself already provides the substantial activity for the day.

A relaxed beach afternoon or evening in the historic centre is usually more enjoyable than trying to squeeze three major attractions into one itinerary.

Staying Longer on the Western Costa del Sol?

Estepona works particularly well as part of a wider western Costa del Sol itinerary.

From here, Marbella is the obvious next major destination.

Explore Marbella Old Town, walk through Plaza de los Naranjos and continue towards the Mediterranean.

For a completely different Marbella experience, visit Puerto Banús.

Or choose nature and head towards Cabopino and the Artola Dunes.

The western Costa del Sol becomes much more interesting when you combine these different environments rather than spending every day at the same beach.

Where Does Costa Card Fit?

There is one important distinction to make.

Estepona is not currently one of Costa Card's participating destinations.

Selwo Aventura itself is also not currently a Costa Card participating attraction.

You should therefore not buy Costa Card specifically for your Selwo or Estepona day.

Costa Card becomes relevant when your wider Costa del Sol holiday also takes you to participating destinations such as Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Torremolinos or Málaga.

That distinction keeps your planning simple.

Use Estepona for experiences such as Selwo, the Orchidarium and the Murals Route.

Then use Costa Card when exploring participating destinations elsewhere along the Costa del Sol.

Continue Towards Marbella

If your next destination is Marbella, you can begin using Costa Card benefits there.

One option for active travellers is Aventura Amazonia, an outdoor adventure park in the Marbella area.

Costa Card users currently receive a 10% discount.

That creates an interesting two-day combination:

Day 1 – Estepona: Selwo Aventura → Estepona Old Town

Day 2 – Marbella: Aventura Amazonia → Marbella or Cabopino

Both days are outdoors and adventure-oriented, but the experiences are completely different.

Example: A Complete Selwo Aventura Day

A realistic family itinerary could look like this:

10:00 – Arrive at Selwo Aventura
Check the day's programme and orient yourself.

10:15–13:00 – Explore the park
Prioritise the animals and areas you most want to see.

13:00 – Lunch

14:00 – Continue exploring
Add the Serengeti Safari if booked.

15:30/16:00 – Leave Selwo
Exact timing depends on your visit date and seasonal schedule.

17:00 – Estepona
Head towards the town centre.

17:30 – Walk through Estepona Old Town

19:00 – Mediterranean promenade

20:00 – Dinner

This keeps Selwo as the main attraction while still giving you time to experience Estepona itself.

Is Selwo Aventura Estepona Worth Visiting?

For families and animal lovers, Selwo Aventura Estepona is one of the major full-day attractions on the western Costa del Sol.

The combination of more than 700 animals, open landscapes and optional experiences such as the Serengeti Safari creates something very different from a conventional beach day.

The key is to give the park enough time.

Allow approximately four to five hours.

Wear comfortable shoes.

Check the seasonal opening calendar.

Compare ticket prices for your exact date.

And book additional experiences in advance if they are important to you.

Then keep the remainder of the day simple.

From African Wildlife to Andalusian Streets

Watch giraffes, rhinos and elephants during the day.

Then leave the park and spend your evening walking through Estepona.

The contrast is exactly what makes this part of the Costa del Sol interesting.

And when your holiday continues east towards Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Torremolinos or Málaga, you can start adding participating experiences and discounts with Costa Card.
