Ermita Virgen de la Peña: A Unique Rock Chapel in Mijas
One of the smallest monuments in Mijas Pueblo tells one of the village's most distinctive stories. The Ermita Virgen de la Peña is not a grand cathedral or monumental church. It is a small sanctuary carved directly into the rock.

Entrance is free.
And because of its location close to the centre of Mijas Pueblo, the Ermita Virgen de la Peña is easy to include in any walking route through the village.

What Is the Ermita Virgen de la Peña?
The Ermita Virgen de la Peña is a small sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of Mijas.
What makes it unusual is its construction.
Rather than constructing a conventional chapel, a Carmelite monk excavated the sanctuary directly into the rock during the second half of the 17th century.
Inside is the image of the Virgen de la Peña.
Its physical size might be modest, but its cultural and religious importance to Mijas is much greater.
The Virgen de la Peña remains the patron saint of the municipality.
Discover the Legend of the Virgen de la Peña
Like many historic religious sites in Andalucía, the hermitage has its own local legend.
According to tradition, an image of the Virgin had remained hidden for centuries.
In 1586, two young shepherds were supposedly guided towards its location by a dove.
There, the image of the Virgen de la Peña was discovered.
Whether you approach the story from a religious, historical or cultural perspective, the legend remains closely connected with local identity.
Knowing the story before entering makes the tiny sanctuary considerably more interesting.
Step Inside the Rock-Cut Chapel
Take a moment to go inside.
The contrast with larger churches is striking.
Instead of high ceilings and monumental architecture, you enter an intimate religious space built directly into the rock.
Look at the shape of the interior and imagine how unusual its construction must have been centuries ago.
Remember that the Ermita Virgen de la Peña remains a place of worship.
Be respectful if people are praying or attending for religious reasons.
Walk to Mirador del Compás
Do not leave after seeing the hermitage.
Directly beside it is Mirador del Compás.
From here, the elevated location of Mijas Pueblo becomes immediately clear.
The landscape drops towards the Mediterranean, creating a wide panorama over the Costa del Sol.
On a clear day, it is one of the easiest places in the village to enjoy the view.
And like the hermitage, the viewpoint is free.

local history, traditional culture, mountain surroundings and Mediterranean views.
From here, continue into the whitewashed historic centre.
Our Mijas Pueblo guide takes you through the most important places to see next.
Walk Towards Plaza de la Constitución
After the hermitage and viewpoint, continue towards Plaza de la Constitución.
The walk takes you deeper into Mijas Pueblo.
Rather than following the fastest route, explore some of the smaller white streets along the way.
Once you reach Plaza de la Constitución, continue towards the historic fortifications and gardens around La Muralla.
This creates a natural route:
Virgen de la Peña → Mirador del Compás → historic streets → Plaza de la Constitución → La Muralla
Continue to La Muralla
If you enjoyed the views at Mirador del Compás, there is another panoramic area waiting nearby.
La Muralla Mijas combines remnants of the old defensive walls with gardens and viewpoints over the Costa del Sol.
The botanical route around La Muralla also contains around 140 plant species.
Together, Virgen de la Peña and La Muralla make an excellent free walking route through Mijas Pueblo.
Visit Virgen de la Peña with Children
This is an easy historical stop for families because it does not require a long museum visit.
Show children how the chapel has been carved into the rock.
Tell them the story of the two shepherds and the dove.
Then step outside and see how many places you can identify from the viewpoint.
A short historical stop suddenly becomes much more interactive.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?
The Ermita Virgen de la Peña can easily be incorporated into your visit throughout the day.
Morning is a good choice if you want quieter surroundings.
Late afternoon provides softer light across the coast and more comfortable temperatures during summer.
Because the visit itself does not take long, there is no need to organise your entire day around it.
Instead, make it part of your Mijas Pueblo walking route.
How Long Do You Need?
Around 30 to 45 minutes is enough for the hermitage and Mirador del Compás.
However, you should not travel to Mijas Pueblo only for this one monument.
Use it as the beginning of a wider walk.
Allow at least three hours if you want to explore the wider historic centre, Plaza de la Constitución and La Muralla as well.
