Avenida del Mar is easy to overlook when planning a Marbella itinerary, but its location makes it one of the easiest highlights to visit. Walk through Marbella Old Town, cross Alameda Park and within minutes you can be standing among Dalí sculptures before continuing directly towards the beach.

What Is Avenida del Mar?

Avenida del Mar is a pedestrian avenue connecting central Marbella with the Paseo Marítimo and Mediterranean coastline.

Its history predates the promenade you see today.

The area once formed part of Marbella's much larger Alameda park and traditionally functioned as a place where residents gathered and walked.

During the 1980s, work began on an underground car park, before the avenue acquired its current design and function during the 1990s.

Today, it remains an important connection between the city and the sea.

But there is one feature that makes Avenida del Mar particularly special.

The art.

See Ten Dalí Sculptures for Free

Along the centre of Avenida del Mar you will find a permanent open-air collection of ten bronze sculptures designed by Salvador Dalí.

The works were cast in bronze by Bonvicini in Verona.

Rather than standing inside a traditional gallery, the sculptures are displayed along a public pedestrian avenue surrounded by fountains, pergolas and planters.

That completely changes the experience.

You can walk between the works at your own pace, see them from different angles and continue directly towards the Mediterranean afterwards.

No tickets.

No queue.

No museum schedule.

It is one of the easiest cultural experiences to add to a day in Marbella.

Why Are There Dalí Sculptures in Marbella?

Marbella has long combined its traditional Andalusian character with an international cultural identity.

Avenida del Mar reflects that combination particularly well.

The promenade itself forms part of central Marbella's public space, while the permanent Dalí collection effectively turns it into an outdoor gallery.

The surrealist forms also create a striking contrast with the Mediterranean surroundings.

You have modern bronze sculptures in front of you, the historic centre only minutes behind you and the sea directly ahead.

Few locations demonstrate Marbella's different personalities quite as efficiently.

Take Your Time Looking at the Sculptures

Do not simply use Avenida del Mar as a shortcut to the beach.

Walk between the sculptures.

Look at them from several angles.

Salvador Dalí's work is known for surreal imagery, distorted forms and unexpected combinations. Even if you know very little about art, the sculptures invite you to decide what you see in them.

That also makes the location accessible for families.

Instead of asking children to quietly walk through an art museum, let them choose the strangest sculpture or their favourite work.

It turns a cultural stop into something much more informal.

Start in Marbella Old Town

The best way to visit Avenida del Mar is not to travel there as an isolated attraction.

Start in Marbella Old Town.

Explore Plaza de los Naranjos and the surrounding whitewashed streets before walking towards Parque de la Alameda.

Cross the park and you will naturally arrive at Avenida del Mar.

The transition is one of the reasons we like this route.

Within a relatively short walk, Marbella changes from narrow historic streets to green public space, open-air art and finally the Mediterranean.

Our suggested route is:

Plaza de los Naranjos → Marbella Old Town → Parque de la Alameda → Avenida del Mar → Paseo Marítimo → beach

The entire sightseeing section can be enjoyed for free.

Continue Towards Marbella's Seafront

Once you have seen the Dalí sculptures, keep walking.

Avenida del Mar leads directly towards Marbella's seafront.

From there, you can turn onto the Paseo Marítimo for a longer coastal walk or find somewhere for coffee, lunch or a drink.

This makes Avenida del Mar particularly useful when you only have a limited amount of time in Marbella.

Rather than travelling between separate attractions, you can connect several highlights on foot.

Visit Avenida del Mar with Your Partner

If you are visiting Marbella as a couple, Avenida del Mar works particularly well in the late afternoon.

Start in the Old Town, walk through Alameda Park and explore the sculptures before heading towards the Mediterranean.

Continue along the promenade and find somewhere for a drink or dinner.

It is simple, requires very little planning and gives you several completely different Marbella experiences in a relatively small area.

Avenida del Mar with Children

Art does not always need to involve a museum.

That is exactly why Avenida del Mar works with children.

The sculptures are outside, there are no entrance fees and children can move between the works rather than following a formal museum route.

Ask them to choose:

  • the funniest sculpture;

  • the strangest sculpture;

  • their favourite sculpture;

  • what they think each work represents.

Afterwards, continue directly towards the beach.

It is an easy way to add some culture to a family day without making it feel like a traditional sightseeing exercise.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Avenida del Mar?

You can visit Avenida del Mar throughout the year.

There are no traditional museum opening hours because the sculptures are located in public space.

During summer, mornings and late afternoons are the most comfortable times to visit.

Late afternoon has another advantage.

After seeing the sculptures, you can continue towards the seafront as the light becomes softer and temperatures begin to fall.

If photography is important to you, early morning generally provides a quieter experience.

How Long Do You Need?

Around 30 to 60 minutes is enough to enjoy Avenida del Mar itself.

But we would not recommend planning only 30 minutes in this part of Marbella.

Its central location means you can easily turn it into a half-day route.

Spend a few hours in Marbella Old Town, continue through Alameda Park and Avenida del Mar and finish beside the Mediterranean.

If you have more time, head towards Puerto Banús later in the day.

Is Avenida del Mar Worth Visiting?

Yes, especially because there is almost no reason not to.

It is central.

It is free.

It connects Marbella Old Town with the sea.

And it gives you the unusual opportunity to see a collection of ten Dalí-designed bronze sculptures without entering a museum.

You do not need to be an art expert to enjoy it.

For some visitors, Avenida del Mar will be a cultural highlight. For others, it will simply be a beautiful route between the historic centre and the beach.

Both are perfectly good reasons to visit.
